The Autonomous Nervous System: Maintaining Balance and State Regulation
Exploring how the Autonomic nervous system influences mental well being.
What has the nervous system got to do with my mental well being?
The human body is a complex and intricate system, constantly interacting with the world around us. One of the key components responsible for maintaining our physical and mental well-being is the Autonomous Nervous System (ANS). This intricate network of nerves and ganglia operates intelligently to ensure a safe and harmonious relationship with our environment.
What is the ANS responsible for?
Our ANS is responsible for regulating various bodily functions, such as heart rate, digestion, respiration, and temperature control. It achieves this by continuously monitoring the internal and external environments and responding accordingly. This process is known as state regulation, where the ANS strives to keep our body in a state of balance.
Let's look at some examples of how it does this.
For example, if we are exposed to high temperatures, the ANS will signal the body to initiate cooling mechanisms, such as sweating. Similarly, if we are hungry or thirsty, the ANS will activate the appropriate signals to prompt us to eat or drink. It signals fatigue, prompting us to rest, and it also responds if we are under threat, real or perceived, and will produce the neurobiological responses it deems necessary to respond to the threat and keep us safe. These are our survival responses.
The ANS operates through two main divisions: the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. These divisions work in tandem to maintain balance and regulate bodily functions. The sympathetic division is responsible for the body's "fight or flight" response, which are activated in response to threat and are survival responses. The parasympathetic division promotes a "rest and digest" state, allowing the body to conserve energy and recover. However, the parasympathetic division is also responsible for activating Dorsal Vagal state, which is the body's 'Freeze, shut down, fawn response, and also set of survival responses. As well as the Ventral Vagal state; the body's social engagement centre and state of connection and safety.
The ANS operates automatically, meaning we are largely unconscious to everything it is doing all of the time on a day to day basis. However, we can connect into it through intentional practices such conscious breathing and movement. When we use conscious breath and movement, there is opportunity to directly access our ANS and positively impact our state of mind and body through bringing us back towards balance. Conversely, chronic stress and anxiety can disrupt the ANS, leading to prolonged periods of state dysregulation, imbalances and health issues.
Our ANS is always working for us.
The ANS is a highly adaptive system, constantly adjusting to the ever-changing demands of our environment. It is a remarkable example of the body's intelligence and ability to self-regulate. We call this ability. nervous system 'flexibility', and it is influenced by factors including genetics, age, lifestyle choices and perhaps most significantly, the degree to which a person has been able to process and integrate their life experiences during their life to date. When our ANS is carry stored stress points from life experiences and emotions which were not processed at the time, it creates a build up of dysregulation which impacts of mental well-being.
The Autonomous Nervous System plays a vital role in maintaining our whole person well-being.
Understanding the functions of the ANS and its impact on our overall health can empower us to make conscious choices that support its optimal functioning.
